How to Play

Instructions

Chess is a two-player board game played on a checkered board with 64 squares arranged in an 8x8 grid. Each player begins the game with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.

The objective of the game is to checkmate the opponent's king, which means the king is under attack and cannot escape capture on the next move.

The pieces move in different ways:

  • The king can move one square in any direction.
  • The queen can move any number of squares diagonally, horizontally, or vertically.
  • The rook can move any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
  • The bishop can move any number of squares diagonally.
  • The knight moves to any of the squares immediately adjacent to it, then moves to the square that is two squares away from the starting square on a perpendicular line.
  • The pawn can move forward one square, or two squares on its first move, and captures diagonally.

Basic Strategies

Here are some basic strategies to help improve your game:

  • Control the center of the board.
  • Develop your pieces by moving them to active squares.
  • Protect your king by castling early.
  • Look for tactical opportunities to capture pieces or create threats.
  • Pay attention to your opponent's moves and try to anticipate their plans.
